How We Handle Electrical Emergencies

In an electrical emergency, you need more than a name in a directory. You need to know what will happen once you call. When you contact us for help from a 24 hour electrician, our goal is to stabilize the situation quickly and keep you informed at every step.

Your call is answered by a knowledgeable team member who will ask focused questions about what you are experiencing. We typically ask about any burning odors, visible smoke, tripped breakers, recent storms, or equipment that failed right before the problem started. This helps us assess the level of risk and determine how to prioritize your call.

When our technicians arrive, they start with safety. They look for obvious hazards such as hot panels, damaged wiring, or equipment exposed to water. If it is safe to do so, they may shut off specific circuits or the main power to help prevent further damage. Our team explains what they are doing in clear language, so you always understand why certain steps are necessary.

Once the area is secure, we begin troubleshooting. Our technicians rely on decades of experience and extensive training to track the issue to its source. That might be a failing breaker, an overloaded circuit, a damaged connection, or a piece of equipment pulling more power than the system can safely provide. We walk you through what we find, outline the options, and discuss likely timelines and costs before moving forward with any significant work.

Sometimes, the immediate goal is to restore essential power or make the system safer until a more extensive repair or upgrade can be scheduled. Other times, we can complete a lasting repair during the initial visit. In both cases, our team works carefully, keeps the work area as tidy as possible, and tests the system before leaving. You will know what was done, what to watch for, and what we recommend for long term reliability.

Our experience with complex environments such as school systems and distribution centers means we are comfortable working around critical operations and coordinating with your staff. Whether you are a homeowner facing a late night outage or a business manager dealing with a failed panel, we focus on safety, communication, and clean workmanship.

Common Electrical Emergencies We See

Electrical problems can look very different from one building to another, but certain warning signs come up again and again. Recognizing them early can help you decide when it is time to call an emergency electrician, rather than waiting for a convenient appointment.

In many older homes in the area, aging panels and wiring struggle with today’s electrical loads. Frequent breaker trips, lights that dim when appliances start, or warm outlets can indicate circuits that are working too hard. If a breaker will not reset or trips again immediately, that can point to a more serious issue that should be checked promptly.

Commercial settings often face different kinds of emergencies. A failed lighting circuit in a warehouse aisle, power loss to a walk in cooler, or a main panel issue in a school can disrupt operations and create safety hazards. Our background working with distribution centers and school systems helps us understand the urgency when systems that serve many people are affected.

Sometimes the warning is more obvious, such as a burning plastic smell near a panel or outlet, visible scorch marks, or crackling sounds from a fixture. These situations can indicate overheating components or loose connections and should be treated as urgent.

Call us immediately if you notice any of these warning signs:

  • Persistent burning odor from a panel, outlet, or light fixture
  • Breakers that will not reset or trip again right away
  • Outlets, switches, or cords that feel hot to the touch
  • Sparks, smoke, or buzzing sounds from electrical equipment
  • Sudden loss of power to critical areas of your home or facility

If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, you can still reach out to our team. We will ask a few questions, help you gauge the level of risk, and schedule the right type of visit with an emergency electrician Louisville property owners trust.

What To Do During An Electrical Emergency

When something goes wrong with your electrical system, it can be hard to know what to do while you wait for help. The right steps can reduce risk and make our visit more efficient. The most important priority is always keeping people away from potential hazards.

If you smell burning or see smoke near electrical equipment, move everyone away from the area and avoid touching affected panels, outlets, or appliances. If there is active fire, contact emergency services first. If it is safe and dry, you may decide to turn off power at the main breaker, but only if you can reach it without passing close to smoke or damaged equipment.

Do not attempt to open electrical panels, remove outlet covers, or handle damaged cords. Avoid using water near any electrical issue, especially if you suspect the problem involves outdoor equipment or areas that may be wet. If you are unsure how serious the situation is, err on the side of caution and keep people clear until our technicians arrive.

If you suspect an electrical emergency, take these steps:

  • Keep people and pets away from the affected area
  • Do not touch hot, damaged, or wet electrical components
  • Call (502) 610-4690 to speak with our team about what you are seeing
  • Follow any safety instructions our team provides over the phone
  • Gather basic information about your panel location and recent work, if you can do so safely

When you call us as your 24/7 electrician Louisville residents rely on, we work to guide you calmly through these steps. Our technicians follow similar safety procedures when they arrive, so the actions you take ahead of time help us move quickly and safely once we are on site.

Our FAQ

Find Quick Answers About Our Work and Processes
  • Do we need to have a company representative be present when work is going on?
You do not need to be present when work is completed. We are licensed, bonded, and insured for your protection, and all of our electricians are thoroughly screened and background checked. If you have questions about the work being completed, then we do encourage you to be present at the time the technician arrives. It comes down to your preferences, and we will work with you to accommodate your schedule.
  • How soon can we get scheduled?
We do our very best to try and work within your time frame, allowing for all materials to be received so we can arrive, inspect, and install.
  • Do you offer any warranty on your work?
Yes, NLMS does warranty our labor and materials. Materials come with manufacture warranties. Some manufactures offer a warranty up to 10 years, but most are at least backed by a 5-year limited warranty. NLMS also warranties our craftsmanship. Normal labor warranties are backed by 1 year; however, we believe all issues deserve a full inspection as to why the situation happened and if in any way the issue was installation related, NLMS will be happy to further investigate and work with you on providing a solution. You are in good hands with us, it is our reputation on the line and that cannot be compromised!
  • What are the advantages of LED lighting over Fluorescent or CFL?
Most fluorescent lights and compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) contain mercury among other hazardous materials. As such, these lighting products must be disposed of carefully and properly, so that they do not contaminate landfills or cause danger to anyone. Fluorescent lights are also subject to flickering, and some people can be very sensitive to this, and even experience strained eyes, headaches, and even migraines. On the other hand, LED lights utilize solid-state technology, which enables stable dimming without flickering.  Additionally, fluorescent lights can take a significant amount of time to reach their full brightness levels, especially when it is cold. LED lights, on the other hand, turn on instantly in any environment and temperature.
  • What’s better for lighting, incandescent, halogen or LED?
LED lighting is more efficient than incandescent or halogen lighting by approximately 85%, partly because approximately 80-90% of energy emitted from those bulbs gets converted to heat instead of light. Because of this, LED lights do not require nearly as much energy to produce the same amount of light. By design, LED lights will also last about 50x longer than incandescent or halogen lighting.
